An opening reception for the exhibit will be held at the Civic Center on Thursday, January 26, from 5:30-7PM. The exhibit will be open Tuesday-Friday from 9am-4pm all other times. The show is free and open to the public.
The exhibit is one of the 40 events BCAC has scheduled for 2012 to celebrate its 40th year anniversary.
According to BCAC executive director Joey Toler, this exhibit seems especially appropriate at this time. "All four artists have been patrons, volunteers, board members, and particularly, productive artists during the Arts Council's history. One of them is even a past-president of the organization, and they are all Beaufort County artists."

*Pamlico River Quilters' Guild Donates Quilt

The Pamlico River Quilters' Guild of Washington created a quilt in honor of the Beaufort County Arts Council's 40th anniversary. The quilt is 78" X 87" and is available to view Tuesday-Friday from 9am to 4pm at the Arts Council's office on Gladden Street in Washington.
As part of the Arts Council's 40th anniversary year celebration, raffle tickets will be sold throughout the year for patrons and visitors to purchase to win the quilt at a drawing to be held at the final anniversary celebration in January 2013. Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and can be purchased at the Arts Council or at any Arts Council event in 2012.
The quilt was presented to the Arts Council this past fall. Guild members who worked on the quilt are Pat Carlson, Gwen Estep, Kathy Schaffter, Toni Reiner, Glenda Barnes, and Louise Heerschap (who did the machine quilting).
For more information about the Arts Council, call 252.946.2504 or email beaufortcountyarts@embarqmail.com. The kick-off for this milestone event will start with an opening reception for a special exhibit featuring work from BCAC over the last three-plus decades. The opening reception will take place from 5:00-7:00pm at the Washington Civic Center, and is open to Arts Council members, patrons, and guests.
The exhibit will be open to the public on Sunday, January 15 from 1-3pm and on Monday, January 16 from 10am-3pm. The exhibit is free to attend.
This special temporary exhibit will feature work on loan from patrons' collections as well as several major works from the collection of First South Bank. The work will represent a retrospective of art from local and regional artists, with most all of the work coming from a BCAC Fine Arts Show or other exhibit.
According to executive director Joey Toler, the kick-off exhibit will begin a year-long program of special events celebrating BCAC's 40 years of service to Beaufort County. "We have a variety of programs scheduled this year to celebrate this major anniversary in addition to the regular programs that we present annually."

*Beaufort County Arts Council Awarded Over $88,000 in Grants from the North Carolina Arts Council

The Beaufort County Arts Council has been awarded $88,383.00 in total grant funding from the North Carolina Arts Council for fiscal year 2011-2012 that will cover a variety of programs throughout the region.
BCAC applied for and received grant money in four out of the four categories in which applications were submitted.
An Arts In Communities Grant for Grassroots Arts Programs in the amount of $13,383.00 will be used to support local arts organizations such as the Beaufort County Choral Society and the Beaufort County Orchestra. Part of these funds will also go to support a school residency by African-American storyteller Joyce Greer to impact all elementary students countywide. In addition, funding will be available to support BCAC's annual BoCO Music Festival, an exhibit by artists Dion Burroughs, Erskine Spruill, and Alexandra Bloch in September, and the organization's first Multi-Cultural Festival to be held in October.
An Arts-In-Education Artist Residency Grant in the amount of $5,000.00 will support a weeklong stint by artist Bryant Holsenbeck who will work with fourth-graders from Chocowinity Primary School on a landscape architecture installation at the school.
An Arts In Communities Regional Arts Partners Grant in the amount of $15,000.00 will be used to work with neighboring Hyde and Washington Counties to ensure that these communities, who do not have established arts councils, will receive quality arts programs that impact schools and community audiences. BCAC also serves as the fiscal agent for Hyde County's Grassroot Grant funds.
An Arts In Communities Technical Assistant Grant in the amount of $55,000.00 will be used to support a regional coordinator position to serve all arts councils east of I95 as the North Carolina Arts Council continues its initiative to focus more attention on communities in the eastern part of the state.
"State funds allow BCAC to provide quality arts programming for students and adults, while also sustaining our local economy," said Joey Toler, executive director of the arts council.
Last year, BCAC provided programming that reached over 10,000 people, including residents, visitors, and students throughout Beaufort County. Highlights of this support included the Aurora Fossil Festival, BathFest, and Belhaven's Annual Fourth of July Celebration.
"The support of our grants program by the General Assembly during these economically challenging times demonstrates the role the arts play in our economy and our quality of life," said Mary B. Reagan, executive director of the NC Arts Council. "Nonprofit arts organizations employ workers, stimulate commerce, generate tax revenues and help communities retain their vibrancy."
More than 8.7 million people participated in NCAC-funded projects last year in schools, senior centers, museums, concert halls, and community centers. Nearly 2.9 million of these were children and youth.
The NCAC awards grant money each year to provide diverse arts experiences for citizens in all 100 counties of NC. In fiscal year 2011-2012, NCAC is expected to distribute $6.4 million in state and federal grant funds to arts organizations, schools, and other nonprofit organizations that sponsor arts programs.

*Art Camp 2011

Registration is underway for the Beaufort County Arts Council's Youth Art Camp. Entries will be accepted for the exhibit through Friday, May 20th at 4:00 pm.
BCAC began the annual juried photography show in the summer of 2008 in response to the overwhelming amount of entries in the organization's annual Fine Arts Show.
The juror for the upcoming 2011 exhibit will be Julie Snyder Mixon. Mixon received her BFA Degree with a concentration in photography from Barton College in Wilson, NC in 2002. She went on to ECU where she received her MFA with a concentration in photography in December 2004. Julie is currently a full-time art instructor at Lenoir Community College in Kinston, NC where she teaches a variety of photography courses and art fundamentals courses. Outside of higher education, she also teaches photography workshops both locally and nationally. Currently, she resides in Winterville, NC with her husband Shannon. To view her work and portrait photography, you can visit www.juliemixon.com.
There have been a few minor changes in the categories for the 2011 exhibit. Categories include Documentary/People, Landscapes/Places, Nature/Wildlife, Mixed Media/Alternative Process, and a special Youth Division (under age 18).
Special awards for the exhibit include Best In Show, sponsored by Stewart's Jewelry Store ($150), the Washington Daily News Award for best example of photo journalism ($100), and the Frank Sommerkamp History Award for work best depicting a sense of history ($100). The Ernest I. and Ethel Harding Cutler Award ($50) and the Jesse Lee and Corinne Mayo Smith Award ($50) are both for outstanding work in the Youth category.
Each category will receive a $100 First Place and $50 Second Place cash award. Third Place and up to nine honorable mentions in each category, along with all Youth Division awards, will receive ribbons.
A maximum of four entries may be submitted. The entry fee is $20 for one or two works and $7.50 for each additional entry. Photographers may submit images on a CD with a .JPG format of 300 dpi. Actual prints, framed or unframed, may also be entered. Submission of entries does not guarantee acceptance for exhibition - only juried work will exhibit. Entries may be mailed or dropped off at BCAC, PO Box 634, 108 Gladden Street, Washington, NC, 27889. Accepted works will be notified beginning June 12.

*Arts Council Brings Music Residency to Bath School || View Video on Youtube

Musician Charles Pettee set up shop this February at Bath Elementary School (BES) for a one-week residency. The arts residency is the result of an Arts In Education grant from the North Carolina Arts Council, administered by the Beaufort County Arts Council.

The residency was designed to reach all students in grades 3-5 at BES and tied in with a number of competency goals in the areas of Music, Geography, and History. The residency, titled "Bluegrass Stomp: Hear the Sound of North Carolina, Then and Now!", gave students the opportunity to produce lyrics and influence the musical arrangement of an original folk song that relates to the history and geography of their region of Beaufort County. The residency culminated on Friday, February 4 with an assembly performance.

The residency was the result of planning between principal Pam Hodges, music teacher Joanne Krantz, Mr. Pettee, and BCAC. The residency was designed to cover 4 hours of classroom time over the first four days with the school assembly performance planned for Day 5. Each class day had a focus instrument for that day, and students used world maps to identify the place(s) of origin for each instrument. The process of songwriting began on Day 1. Since folk music deals with land and place and everyday concerns of the people, students compiled a list of topics and ideas from which they constructed lyrics and rhyming lines. Instruction incorporated the cultural differences and social issues that influenced southern folk music.

Charles Pettee is a Chapel Hill resident who is perhaps best-known for his work with the Shady Grove Band, a group that has toured the world for more than 20 years. During this time, Pettee has continually worked as an educator presenting residencies and music workshops to school children throughout the state and the region.

Copyright © 2009 Beaufort County Arts Council || 108 Gladden Street ♦ Washington, NC 27889 ♦ 252.946.2504 ♦ Email ♦ Cayenne test
